Male Divorce Lawyer. Many readers are not interested in books where the main character does not resemble themselves. Many avoid movies where there is no one “like me.”
Justified or not, this reflects one common belief: someone who has significantly different life experience, who is not “like me” — cannot understand me fully, cannot be sympathetic to my concerns, cannot really be on my side.
Maybe this is why many divorcing women prefer female lawyers, while divorcing men seek for male ones.
Of course this is not completely fair. A good doctor is not obliged to have suffered from decease he treats. A good writer does not need to have travelled to the stars to write science fiction. A good figure skating coach does not need to be an Olympic champion himself, and so forth. Yet, there is a certain consolation to consult a psychologist who managed to avoid his own divorce, or a lawyer who managed to divorce successfully, escaping the usual disaster. And — however poorly this stereotype might be justified — if this adds to the relationship of trust between you and your lawyer, then it is a valid practical factor to consider. If you think that you necessarily need a female or male divorce lawyer, then it is your choice.
Next question would be, if there is one available around. Basically, is there such a divorce lawyer “near me”? — this is the question.
If you remember that most of lawyers — good lawyers included — practice without advertising their names publicly for many reasons, then you won’t limit your search by those popping up first on a Google page. Probably you’d call your local law society, asking where you can access the full list of lawyers “near me”, with particular details: age, sex, languages spoken, areas of expertise, years of experience, etc. You’ll probably choose several and then go to see them to test the “chemistry.” After all, if you are going for divorce, then you probably have already chosen wrongly once. It would make sense if you now choose your lawyer better.
